This is what I did:
1.I booted the working kernel linux-image-2.6.20-13  into safe mode and 
unmounted the EXT3 partition. Then I ran 'e2fsck -f /dev/hda4' which found zero 
errors.
2.I rebooted the machine into linux-image-2.6.20-14-generic SAFE MODE. And this 
are the errors I could gather.

I believe that there is something wrong with the EXT3 module in the
latest kernel which doesn't correctly recognize the EXT3 partition. See
the attachment.

ps. The photos are taken with my cell phone so they are not of very high
quality:)
