I do have gnome-session 2.31.1-0ubuntu9 installed on my computer (verified through the synaptic manager) and after reinstallation of this package and a reboot, the problem persists. I don't know if it is relevant but I noticed that on startup, unity starts first, displaying it's panel (on the left),and then the gnome-panel starts (showing at the bottom of the screen, not at the top (the unity panel being over it))
