Another small observation about this issue. When I plug in a USB drive I seem to get 2 files browsers ( i though that it was because I was a bit click happy) but it may be that I'm getting one Thunar and one Nautilus. That seems to be the reason that I ended up trying to make a copy off Thunar onto Nautilus, since I didn't notice the different browser windows. Still not very user friendly of these apps not to speak to each other.
