The most current version of HPLIP (1.7.3, in Feisty) does not need hpijs-ppds at all. The HP guys have fixed hp-setup so that it asks CUPS for PPDs instead of looking for physical files. CUPS calls the PPD generator of Foomatic which returns the HP PPDs (as you have probably already seen in the gnome-cups-manager, web interface or whatever printer setup tool). So if you are on Feisty, do a complete auto update and your problem will go away.
