Try the alternate install CD (NOT mini.iso). It's a text based installer which is quite self explanatory. Personally, I would recommend sorting out partitions prior to attempting the installation & using a wired connection during the installation. This worked for me on a laptop with 256mb RAM whereas Ubiquity constantly crashed. I appreciate this doesn't help with attaching files, it may be a viable option for installation though.
