Found a *solution* to my problem: After reading this thread https://bugs.launchpad.net/dell/+bug/243637 I downgraded my nVidia driver from nvidia-current (260.19.06-0ubuntu1) to nvidia-173 (173.14.28-0ubuntu1). The upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick must have replaced my graphics driver. GPU heat dropped back to ~61°C on idle. Still around 10° hotter than I find comfortable, this is as low as I have been able to go.
