I also have this problem (Acer-AOD255, Xubuntu 10.10, switching us & th layouts with grp:shifts_toggle)
Comment #4's workaround doesn't work for me: the setting's lost on logout/login as before. Comment #6's workaround (with grp:shifts_toggle) also doesn't work for me, and messes up font and icon settings.
