KODAK EasyShare Z981 Digital Camera has the same problem. After many hours of testing, with bootable live-usb, it appears that this might not be an Ubuntu problem. Ubuntu 10.10 Ubuntu 10.04 PCLinuxOS-gnome-2010.12 All fail every time. "Error initializing camera: -60: Could not lock the device."
Kubuntu 10.10 PCLinuxOS-kde-2010.12 Both seem to work OK.
