If the debian maintainer was unable to make fstrans work https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/checkinstall/+bug/599163 then just go ahead and make the 1 word edit in checkinstallrc and be done with it. The trains already left the station for maverick so do in natty.
