Having the same problem after a fresh install of 10.10 on a new
computer. In gnome-appearance-properties, the theme is right (ambience),
but in the rest the theme is the Gtk standard theme (a.k.a. the flat
ugly one). Starting gnome-appearance-properties only prints the
following:

(gnome-appearance-properties:2095): Gdk-CRITICAL **:
IA__gdk_display_sync: assertion `GDK_IS_DISPLAY (display)' failed

(gnome-appearance-properties:2095): Gdk-CRITICAL **:
