Ah, sorry. It was the HP backend: I experienced this behavior with a
Laserjet 1100 and a Photosmart A612, which presumably didn't fail
because of the same kind of problem. But of course the error was more
severe than lack of paper: with the latter device, a page wasn't printed
correctly.
