A few more observations: 1. this happens on almost every boot with 2.6.37-10-generic.
2. it doesn't seem to happen with the latest upstream from kernel-ppa 3. it happens at various places with respect to monitor modesets, so once in a long while I can see more of the oops (most times the screen is blank).
