Right so this was a configuration issue of my making when I installed from the MinimalCD I chose the wrong keymap, I should have chosen `U.S. English` and it looks like I chose something along the lines of `U.S. English with dead keys`. When I change the System -> Preferences -> Keyboard -> Layout to `U.S. English` keyboard in X behaves as expected.
Also had to run dpkg-reconfigure console-setup and change the keyboard to `U.S. English` in the getty consoles. Have to investigate where gdm gets its keymap from ....
