Hi, Thanks for getting back on this. I do apologise, but I'm only semi literate in Linux (if that!) and tamely followed the instructions on the crash before I thought it through. Having just now repeated the steps to determine whether the crash was a result of having tried to install some modem software, I realized that I had downloaded this: hsfmodem-7.80.02.03full-dellhybrid.tar.bz2 of and it's for Ubuntu 8.10, not the 10.10 live cd I was using. I went back and fired up 10.10, opened a terminal window and did a find on what I knew to be a nonexistant utility (which is what had caused the crash) and it worked fine. It appears that trying to install the above package to the wrong OS is what caused it, not a true bug at all. Sorry to have wasted your time (but this did illustrate the value of having a technical community, something my bosses seemed not to understand at all "But why can't you just do it all by your self??")
