This problem still exists in Feisty beta. I told the installer not to install GRUB on the MBR, and then told it to install on (hd0, 6) instead. This is the partition (/dev sda7) that I was installing to. In this instance, it was formatted with JFS, but last time it was formatted EXT3, so I don't think the JFS is significant. It's a SATA disk.
Anyway, I got a pretty red screen saying the GRUB install had failed. I finished the install by using the "rescue a broken system" option on the installer, chroot to the newly installed root partition and run "grub-install (hd0,6)" by hand, then create a menu.lst. >From memory (I'm on a different machine at the moment), my partitions are hda1 - reiserfs (Breezy) hda2 - NTFS - windoze hda5 - vfat - shared stuff hda6 - ext3 - Edgy hda7 - jfs - Feisty install target hda8 - swap hda9 - reiserfs /home -- Cannot install grub into root partition https://launchpad.net/bugs/63869 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
