Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: asterisk

Asterisk 1.8 is the newest and best-supported version of asterisk.
Asterisk 1.6 will be phased out over the next year and will not receive
anything but security updates past April 2011. This newest version is a
LTS release and will be fully supported all throughout the next four
years. Rather than continue with a version that is due to be phased out
relatively soon, we should probably move up to what will likely become
the standard.

Also, the asterisk package needs a major facelift. I have been working
on a new package for Natty and will soon have one for Maverick in my
PPA.
