Ok, I went to visit someone and it turned out he actually has an Optiplex 980 standing here, so I can answer my own question. I can get microphones working in both Maverick and Natty, both front and rear jacks. However, it requires manually turning the mic boost up in alsamixer, as PulseAudio does not seem to handle this properly. Can you confirm this behaviour?
