"Does this occur in most recent WINE?"
Certainly does (wine-1.2.1, mav.

While possibly talking apples and oranges there is no "detection' by wine of
filesystems mounted @ /media/<volume label> either automatically of thru the
configure wine - autodetect, nor any links created.
Ex. - disks inserted in 2 drives, autodetect finds nothing

$ ls -l ~/.wine/dosdevices
total 0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 doug doug 10 2010-11-28 11:53 c: -> ../drive_c
lrwxrwxrwx 1 doug doug 10 2010-12-11 23:22 h: -> /home/doug
lrwxrwxrwx 1 doug doug  1 2010-11-28 11:53 z: -> /

Now this actually affects me not at all, all the progs I use in wine
that require drive access can be set to use ASPI (WNASPI32.DLL), which
allows direct access to the drive, what wine 'sees' or doesn't is
irrelevant.

Eric - you may wish to just create an fstab entry(s) for your drive(s), then
you should be fine.
I'll mark this as new, if you wish to pursue then confirm and follow up.
Good luck
