Not sure what has happened in the last few days to change this situation, but I now find that the problem described has gone away. I can use the full connectivity of the KDE utilities referred to above with the Kensington mouse. Accordingly, I wish to withdraw this bug report. I don't know how to do this, so would be obliged if someone could mark it appropriately.
