Public bug reported: Binary package hint: tzdata
At the very beginning, I wanted to use ant to build a java program (haploview http://sourceforge.net/projects/haploview/ ), I installed 'ant' from synaptic. When I use it to build, it complains JAVA_HOME not properly set and something related to JDK. I install 'ant1.8' and same problem occurred. I found no JDK installed. So I tried to install 'default JDK', but error occurred. Then I tried 'openjdk-6-jdk' by apt- get, similar error: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: openjdk-6-jdk: Depends: openjdk-6-jre (>= 6b20-1.9.2-0ubuntu1~10.04.1) but it is not going to be installed E: Broken packages I want to track down to see which package has problem. So I install 'openjdk-6-jre', and similarly then 'openjdk-6-jre-headless', then 'tzdata-java', and I got: Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: tzdata-java: Depends: tzdata (= 2010i-1) but 2010j~repack-0ubuntu0.9.04 is to be installed E: Broken packages So the problem probably is, tzdata defaultly installed (2010j~repack-0ubuntu0.9.04) has different version than JDK requirement (2010i-1). I verified the version in Synaptic. You may want to fix it. By the way, I installed 'sun-java6-jdk' (not ubuntu supported) from synaptic then everything is ok.
