Steve, these are workarounds and not really solutions, yes. However, in
most cases the networking script is not necessary because all network
interfaces that are marked as "auto" will be enabled by
/etc/udev/rules.d/85-ifupdown.rules as soon as they are detected. This
is the modern event-based scheme (think upstart). The networking script
is an old-world relique that eventually (no pun intended) will disappear
AFAIK.
