Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vlc

Feisty Fawn, AMD64, VLC 0.8.6.release-0ubuntu4

Some application (but I know it happens at least with VLC) suffer from
this. If you open a file go to browse, type in a location and press
ENTER the path is not changed. If you press OPEN in the right bottom
corner, then it does work. However other application (gedir for example)
do work as expected

Seems like same behavior as in
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gtk+2.0/+bug/62660

Further, if you do:
Open File -> Browse -> Cancel -> Cancel -> Open File -> Browse
this works but if you do
Open File -> Browse -> ESC ->ESC -> Open File -> Browse
VLC hangs giving all errors on console like

(.:8179): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_propagate_event: assertion `GTK_IS_WIDGET
(widget)' failed
(.:8179): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_propagate_event: assertion `GTK_IS_WIDGET
(widget)' failed
(.:8179): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_propagate_event: assertion `GTK_IS_WIDGET
(widget)' failed

** Affects: vlc (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: Unconfirmed
