Same issue here on another HP dv9000. I don't believe I had this problem until I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10, but it's possible i had it in 10.04. All the levels are set in alsamixer, everything in pulseaudio looks good, but still no input level from my internal mic. However, if I hookup an external mic I can get level from it.
