I have the same problem, also reported previously on different kernels , lucid onwards. I am now on maverick, and same problem, though not as frequent. It also affects USB devices, and can sometimes cause all USB devices to fail. I have pata_via module I can reproduce effect by loading system, ethernet transfers, tv tuner working and running virtualbox.
