The generic kernel will used the kernel best suited for your system which in this case I believe would be a 64 bit kernel. Since you have the x86 install CD the 64 bit kernel doesn't exist on it. Therefore it can't find the right "generic" kernel, so this doesn't really seem like a bug to me.
