Odd.  If you're still seeing this (sorry for the delay!), could you
please install the strace package, and then run:

  sudo strace -f -o update-grub.trace -s 1024 /usr/sbin/update-grub

This should produce a similar error, but should create a file called
update-grub.trace that has a trace of what happened.  Please attach that
file to this bug, and then I'll be able to investigate that to figure
out exactly what went wrong.
