@martin: Thanks that works for me as well (desktop effects - just turned
them OFF* and my calendar now sits neatly just above the clock and not
half off the screen.. *Ubuntu Menu/System/Preferences/Appearance/Visual
Effects)

BUT every time I boot the computer it will go back to natural visual
effects (and I have the problem again), is there a way to change it
permanently to visual effects NONE?
