@Adam: This problem is related to VMWare versions 6.5.4, 7.0, 7.1, 7.1.1
(according to description) and with the 2.6.35 kernel.

The workaround I posted has been tested against Ubuntu 10.10 with 2.6.35
kernel (not by me tho) and it only applies to 7.x.x versions.

I don't know if this works with 6.5 version, but it would be better to
update it first to the latest version (if possible). Or, like you said,
use VirtualBox as an alternative.
