@Adam: This problem is related to VMWare versions 6.5.4, 7.0, 7.1, 7.1.1 (according to description) and with the 2.6.35 kernel.
The workaround I posted has been tested against Ubuntu 10.10 with 2.6.35 kernel (not by me tho) and it only applies to 7.x.x versions. I don't know if this works with 6.5 version, but it would be better to update it first to the latest version (if possible).
