When looking further, it has to do with the content being printed in my
case. A test page works, a simple document as well. Things like a
firefox printout or pdf's fail depending on content. When printing a
'hanging' document this clogs up the total queue of course.

I've removed hplip (directly installed from repo ubuntu 10.10) and installed 
the one provided by HP: HPLIP 3.10.9.
This is a hassle but solved my problem, all content is now printed fine. So I 
expect there was a fix upstream in HPLIP? Or maybe some dependencies are needed 
(i had to install a bunch to get hp-setup rolling).
