I am pretty sure the IO error is because Ubuntu ejects the cd and then
tries to access the cd (duh). This should not affect whether the
installed system is bootable.

Need info: What disk (hda1, hda2, etc) did you install Ubuntu on, and
what disk did you install the bootloader (GRUB) on?
