Confirming the issue in Maverick. The issue was there in Lucid as well.

This happens when I use Mobile Broadband connection. The applet vanishes
from the system tray but this does not affect the Internet connection.

When I run nm-applet from the terminal I get the following message:
$nm-applet
** Message: applet now removed from the notification area
** Message: applet now embedded in the notification area
** (nm-applet:19421): DEBUG: old state indicates that this was not a disconnect 0
** (nm-applet:19421): DEBUG: old state indicates that this was not a disconnect 0

Distro: Ubuntu 10.10 x86
