I am seeing a similar problem with a new install of Ubuntu 10.04 AMD64 with Nvidia 173... drivers and two video cards. It does appear to be a race condition, however the fix from post #68 does not work for me.
The problem can be reliably reproduced (or not) with the following steps: 1. log in normally. 2. activate "switch user" in the gui; a new xsession starts with a password entry box 3. enter the password. when typing in the password, the 'dots' in the password box do not echo immediately. 4. now do one of two things: a. immediately hit enter - the new session starts with the wrong theme b. wait until the 'dots' echo before hitting enter - the new session starts correctly with the correct theme. looking at .xsession-errors , the difference between a 'good' login and a 'bad' one appears to be: ** (gnome-settings-daemon:4748): WARNING **: You can only run one xsettings manager at a time; exiting ** (gnome-settings-daemon:4748): WARNING **: Unable to start xsettings manager: Could not initialize xsettings manager. Failed to play sound: Sound disabled Unable to find a synaptics device. Hope that helps locate the problem.
