The situation is getting curiouser and curiouser. Early this morning I
installed another large batch of updates. After the installation the
headphones were working and the alsamixer column was no longer greyed
out.

But then I rebooted and disaster struck in the form of a hangup at the
"Checking battery state" message. After much net searching and
thrashing about, I managed to log into gdm but not kdm, despite the fact
that kdm was installed. That's where I am now. At this point the sound
sometimes works and sometimes doesn't, and the headphone column is
sometimes greyed out and sometimes not. I have yet to discern a
pattern.

It does seem that the latest updates solved the headphone problem
temporarily, so I suppose that's progress.
