This usb flash drive
http://www.imation.com/products/flash_devices/usb_flash_pivot.html
(should be linux kernel 2.4 compatible) has problems when inserted while
the system is already booted. Here's a snippet from dmesg and an attempt
to fdisk:

The system is the last Feisty, I tried this on a PC and on a Dell d420
notebook Linux it 2.6.20-13-generic #2 SMP Sun Mar 25 00:21:25 UTC 2007
i686 GNU/Linux. When I insert the stick before the system is booted,
it's working well.
