Well, it did work correctly until my latest update, so it must be possible to fix it. I'm not sure just what got updated, though -- I did the regular update that Kubuntu recommends. My guess is that the problem lies in the latest changes to alsa-base or pulseaudio. If it helps, I'm guessing that I did the troublesome update about a week ago. So the right way to fix it probably is to revert something that got changed and make the necessary improvements a different way.
