I tried "noquiet" and "nosplash" but the debug output seems copious
regardless.  I would love to page backward but nothing works.  I have
let it run for 5 minutes.  I will try 10.

I have three SATA disk drives.  Ubuntu has a brand new 500GB disk all to
itself - no raid.

There seems to be something fishy about my system - it hangs in the same
place when Ubuntu boots from CD.  Perhaps I should unplug my hard
drives...

FWIW, playing with 'ls' in Bash, I noticed that two of the hd's had the
same UUID.  Now that's not right...
