This seems to be a general Ubuntu problem and is not related to Kubuntu alone. By now I tried all Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Xubuntu, i386 and amd64 versions. However, I succeeded installing Ubuntu 10.10 amd64 using the ALTERNATE installer. Thus my best guess is that the problem is related to the graphics system somehow. Here is the lspci output for my graphics card:
