Finally I found a (the?) solution to the problem: The disk partitioner had some problems with the partitioning of one of my HDDs. When unplugging /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc the installer (10.04 and 10.10) would run nicely. After creating a new partition table (backup first!) and then re-creating the partitions I ran the installer again and successfully completed the installation without any complications. Don't know where this came from as to my knowledge I only used *nix tools to partition the drives. Hope this helps.
