Well, actually I still have problems... I am still using the default Ubuntu 10.10 driver (currently I am on kernel 2.6.35-22.35). When I boot under battery power only, WLAN connects as expected, but when I suspend an wake the system up after a few minutes it will not connect again. I tried disabling networking and enabling it again, but this does not help.
The REALLY WEIRD thing is that when I attach the power supply everything works as expected all the time!
