Hello Fabi, I haven't looked at my email for a while so first I appologise for the late reply. The bug happend with all the Ubuntu 8's and 9's however 10.04.1 is ok. 10.10 I haven't tried yet. Some other details which may be of use is that at the time of 9.10 I switched from an old crt to the monitor that I mention. I had other problems with 9.10 which I couldn't solve in the few days I had available so I skipped it and stayed with 9.04 until 10.04 which was also skipped due to the apparant complexity of the post install mending, I'm an application user rather than an IT wizard I'm afraid and couldn't face another 9.10 like experiance. 10.04.1 seems great so far, reminds me of the old Ubuntu 7's "it just works" idea, all I had to do was start the gdm from the command line, which the first lucid boot took me to, then make that change persist through cold boots which was trivial. Another detail which may, or may not, have something to do with it is that on booting I always get an error message which says "MP-BIOS bug: 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC". This happens with most of the distro's that I have tried including all Ubuntu's, however it doesn't seem to affect functionality once I get in.
I'm sorry I know so little and am grateful to for the reply, on posting and seeing that I seemed to be alone I presumed it was just some fault in my machine and never expected a responce. Thank you for your time and effort, it is appreciated.
