Yesterday, I performed a fresh maverick install on a sony vaio VGN-SR41M (on a new SSD) and I appear to be having very similar problems. Using suspend, it appears to work successfully, there are no errors reported in /var/log/pm-suspend.log but hitting the power button triggers a reboot. I have tried with and without the propriety ATI (v10.10) catalyst driver with the same result. This function worked correctly for me under 10.04.
