Binary package hint: pppoeconf
I say so because pppoeconf is conflicting with network-manager. You can
ask how? Try to establish a connection with pppoeconf. Now, what do we
have? Network-manager says that ethernet interface unavailable or
something like this. As result there is no ability to use network-manger
even after removing pppoeconf.
