I am experiencing the same issue. I believe this issue started some where around kernel version 2.6.30 when i used to run Gentoo last year. I don't believe it is a hardware issue or bios bug. I have tried several different bios version, video drivers and xserver version. As far as i can tell its a kernel bug as sysreq does not work and cannot log in through ssh.
