This issue was fixed. It had something to do with the fact that I have a RAID 1 array with a MBR on it (because I treat the raw array as a raw drive for a VirtualBox VM I'm running on the machine).
In the next version of Ubuntu immediately following this one, HAL was able to deal with this scenario and everything was fine. It even shows up in Disk Manager as a partition with an MBR on it.
