lostthetrail, thanks so much for the headsup! Upon your recommendation, I upgraded to 10.10 and the docking issue has been completely solved!
For anyone who is interested, I'm using a Dell Latitude E6400 that was running Ubuntu 10.04 and I just upgraded to 10.10 using the update manager. The dock is the standard E-Series dock. 100% of the audio goes out the dock's audio output now, and the laptop speakers are not used when the system is docked, as intended. Thanks!!!
