I've duplicated the same issue with both a Microsoft wired optical mouse and a Microsoft wireless optical mouse:
Playing a sound file via movie player / rhythmbox causes the left click button to cease working with the wireless mouse. When I restart gdm and do the same with the wired mouse, all three buttons stop working. When the clicks stop registering on my mouse, they also stop registering from the buttons built into my laptop.
