Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: erc

In the erc which shipped in emacs22, the server buffer's mode line would
contain the server's name, like server.example.com:6667 (which is also
the buffer's name). Now in emacs23 and the newest standalone erc, the
server buffer's mode line always says Unknown.

This is especially problematic when you connect to multiple servers (see
also tangentially bug #160131). Channel names have the form
#chan...@unknown regardless of which server you are connected to, so the
@Unknown suffix really does not add any information at all.

This is the case at least on Lucid and in the Maverick Release
Candidate. Erc hasn't had an update since 2008 and my recollection is
that I used to see this on Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid as well.

(I don't have erc installed on my Lucid box but I have verified with the
Maverick Release Candidate live CD. The apt-cache policy output would
be essentially identical for Maverick.)

lucid$ apt-cache policy erc
