Oh i see. Sorry about the misunderstanding. Are you sure that Xchat is compatible with that feature? I know empath and pidgin are compatible with the tray but I dont think Xchat is. I tried it over here as well and like you said it can be put into the system tray area but it cannot be "hidden" which leads me to believe that it is not coded to work with that indicator applet.
