right, the reason it works with the 15" is because its resolution is lower and the total doesn't go over the magic 2048 horizontal limit.
You say it worked with Lucid; have you turned on Desktop effects or similar? I'm told that the limit is actual 4096 if a load of acceleration is turned off, and that doesn't work if compiz is on.
