This sounds similar to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/shotwell/+bug/649200 but the crash point is different in each. When you say you were attempting to import photos, what were you doing (or what was Shotwell doing) when the crash occurred? Did you choose File -> Import From Folder..., or drag- and-dropping the folder on Shotwell from Nautilus, or was the import already underway?
